Reflexology during pregnancy
In the last 10 to 20 years the value of reflexology in pregnancy has been increasingly recognised.
A reflexology treatment can focus on reflexes relating to oedema(swelling), endocrine system ( hormones!) and those that help encourage deep relaxation of the body and soul.
How to get the best results?
A treatment before birth can be very relaxing but maximum benefit is gained from a programme of treatments. The Association of Reflexologists recommends that those clients who wish to use reflexology to bring on their labour begin their reflexology sessions at least six weeks prior to their predicted term date ie by 34 weeks pregnant.
I also offer relaxation techniques, hand reflexology points and aromastiks that can be used during labour.
- A recent study has shown that reflexology in pregnancy significantly reduced pain during labour and reduced the length of the first stage of labour ( Valiani M et al ;2010 ' Reviewing the effect of Reflexology on pain and outcomes of the labour of primiparous women' Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research; 15 Dec p302-310)
- An earlier research study showed that first time mums who received 10 reflexology treatments prior to birth had average labour times of 5-6 hours. It was noted that the group treated with reflexology needed far less pain relief during labour too. ( G Motha and J McGrath - 1992 ' The effects of reflexology on labour outcome')
